Why do I need a Waste King Garbage Disposal?

With a good food waste disposer like Waste Kings’, your kitchen will be modern, hygienic, clean and well-managed. Simply put your food leftovers down the sink and, within seconds, the waste is not just out of the kitchen but your home as well.

Simply turn on the cold water faucet, and switch on the disposer. It literally does its work in seconds – really simple!

How do Waste King Garbage Disposals work?

All Waste King Garbage Disposals come with the same cleaning technology, which means all models are capable of disposing of your food waste properly. Let’s see how all of them operate:

The Waste King food waste disposers are designed to handle veggies, fruits, chicken bones, fish bones, egg shells, and much much more! As the motor is switched on, the disposer disposes your food waste into fine particles, suspended in water. This suspension is then flushed out through your waste pipe in the normal way.

Let’s take you inside a garbage disposer:

Waste King internals
Waste King cutaway showing internals
  • The food waste is flushed down the sink by the cold water supply and drops into the chamber onto the revolving metal receiving plate below the mouth of the unit;
  • The strong centripetal spinning action, generated by the strong permanent-magnet electric motor below the spinning receiving plate, forces the waste against the outer wall of the grinding chamber;
  • In seconds, the waste is ground into fine particles, small enough to wash through the tiny holes in the receiving plate beneath the chamber;
  • With the particulate food waste en-trained in the water flow, it is washed into the waste outlet pipe and from there to the sewerage system.
  • No Knives, No Blades, No Danger. Simple.

*Note: The RPM and Horsepower of the spinning motor are different for every model.

1). Waste King Legend Series 1/2 HP Continuous Feed Garbage Disposal with Power Cord – (L-2600)

The Takeaway – ‘Thousands bought with a majority of good reviews, plus it’s cheap but maybe under-powered?’

The Waste King L-2600 comes with a high-speed magnet motor, having 1/2 Horsepower and 2600 RPM.

Compared to the Moen products, the exterior design is pretty uninspiring. But, if you don’t care about aesthetics, then this shouldn’t be a deal breaker …

WasteKing L-2600 installed under sink

The motor is powerful enough to offer an impressive grind, turning food waste into pulp in just a matter of seconds.

Jams are infrequent, but can occur due to the less powerful motor.

Having said that, however, if you are on a budget and want a garbage disposer for well under $100, then you get a lot of bang for your buck with this product.

The product comes with an EZ Mount, making the installation process super easy for the less technically savvy. With the pre-installed 36-inch power cord with plug, there’s no electrical expertise required – just a socket needed under your sink.

The product operates on 115 volts, weighs 7.8 pounds, and has a dimension of 6.8 x 6.8 x 13.5 inches. And Yes, the Waste King Legend 2600 comes with a mechanical warranty of 5-years. If the product malfunctions, the company will repair or replace it free of charge.

2). Waste King Legend Series 1/2 HP Continuous Feed Garbage Disposal with Power Cord – (9930)

The Takeaway – ‘Good reviews, but one of the cheaper disposals so be aware of possible corrosion through the base after a few years – with luck the 5 yr warranty should have you covered!’

The Waste King 9930 has similar functions to the Waste King 2600 model reviewded above, but what makes it a little different is its 3-Bolt mount installation process instead of the EZ Mount system (twist and lock).

The disposal unit is equipped with the same, reasonably powerful, energy efficient magnet motor as the 2600 model. It crushes most of your typical waste without problem. And, being lighter in weight due to the smaller motor, can be held comfortably by flimsier sink units. Noise when in use is also less, again due to the less powerful motor.

The grinding gear is stainless steel, rather than galvanised steel, so there should be zero issues with corrosion of these parts over the years.

However, be aware that some user reviews mention leakage issues from the housing after a few years, most likely through internal corrosion. Not totally unsurprising from a unit that costs less than $100 – as always, you will generally get what you pay for! For a hundred bucks, manufacturing savings inevitably have to be made somewhere, and Waste King’s choice of internal housing materials do probably factor into this.

The garbage disposal unit comes with a pre-installed power cord, thus requiring no electrical work other than an available power socket.

Although this device isn’t equipped with an EZ mount installation system, the professional 3-bolt mounting system provides relatively easy installation for those with some plumbing experience. If you want an easier time fitting a garbage disposal, go for the EZ Mount system of the 2600 below or some of those below.

The Waste King Legend 9930 comes with a 5-year limited mechanical warranty, weighs 8.6 pounds, and the dimensions are practically identical to the 2600 above, coming in at 6.8 x 6.8 x 13.5 inches.

3). Waste King Legend Series 1 HP Continuous Feed Garbage Disposal with Power Cord – (L-8000)

The Takeaway – ‘Strong likelihood of a good experience with the L-8000, overwhelmingly positive reviews plus the warranty, if you do have a problem, seems to be well honored. Nice!’

The Waste King Legend 8000 is a continuous feed garbage disposal system that comes with some really outstanding features.

The unit is provided with a strong high-speed motor, having 1 horsepower and 2800 RPM! Great for families or households with four or more members.

Although sound-insulated like many of the other garbage disposal units, there is the occasional user comment about it being load. Personally, I think this is more likely to be the sink that it is mounted to. A powerful motor unit will inevitably cause some vibration, and if that transmits to your sink, it will inevitably make a noise. As with other units, if you have a flimsy metal sink, consider a unit with a slightly smaller motor to save weight and therefore less harsh vibration.

The EZ Mount makes the installation process super-easy, and many customer reviews do agree with this.

And on the off chance you want to disassemble the system for cleaning or other purposes, you just simply have to rotate the mount and you are done!

Just be aware of potential smells from this unit. Again, however, all Waste King garbage disposal units have largely the same design, just a different sized motor and associated internal gear. If you do get a smell, remove the internal splash guard as it could be old waste trapped behind that shield and just rotting. A quick clean, and you should then be fine. Although not many users have complained about this issue, it does seem to be a possible design flaw.

The Waste King Continuous L-8000 comes with a pre-installed power cord and plug, and simply needs a socket under your sink.

And above all else, Waste King has given this unit a LIFETIME WARRANTY! It is personal to you – so if you move, take the unit with you! However, judging by the positive feedback, Waste King do a great job of honoring this warranty.

This advanced disposal unit operates on 115 volts, weighs 11.94 pounds, and has dimensions that are 16 x 8.5 x 8.5 inches.

For the money (coming in well under $200), with the lifetime warranty, and the powerful motor, it’s easy to see why so many have been sold in addition to so many positive comments.

If your sink is sturdy and you have the space, this unit should be right at the top of your list.

4). Waste King Legend Series 3/4 HP Continuous Feed Garbage Disposal with Power Cord – (3200)

The Takeaway – ‘Not as popular as the L-8000, but shorter and slimmer, less powerful, and good 8 yr warranty’

If you are unable to fit the L-8000, then for smaller spaces and slightly less power, the Waste King 3200 is worth considering.

The motor is still strong enough for most uses at 3/4 HP, compared to the L-8000 above at 1 HP. If you have a smaller family  (young kids, or just two of you), then this unit will still be more than adequate in terms of power and throughput.

As with the other Waste King units, electrical installation is a breeze if you already have a socket under your sink – just plug and go.

Although not necessarily an issue with this particular unit, be aware that the neck of EZ Mount system may not be long enough if you have a thick old-fashioned porcelain sink. No issues with a more modern stainless steel sink, but just make sure the steel is sufficiently thick to minimize vibrational noise. Some users have had issues with fitting the unit with the EZ Mount, so consider switching to the older 3 bolt system. Other complaints seem to be about undue noise, and occasional leaking from the base. Again, for around $100, I guess you should not expect too much, so just be aware.

The product comes with an 8-year warranty, weighs a pretty light 8.6 pounds, runs on 115 volts, and has pretty slim dimensions as follows: 7.8 x 7.8 x 13.8 inches.

To sum up, largely positive reviews, but if you want a Waste King, aim for the L-8000 above as a starting point if at all possible.

5). Waste King Legend Series 1/2 HP Continuous Feed Garbage Disposal with Power Cord – (L-1001)

The Takeaway – ‘Supermodel slim for tiny spaces on a low budget, but drains slow, so aim bigger if you can’

The Waste King 1001 is super slim, allowing you to fit it in really tight under sink spaces. But that seems really to be it’s only saving grace!

It does have a lot of user purchases, and the majority are positive, but not as many as the other models.

The Waste King L-1001 is cheap, hovering around $60, and has a 2 year warranty. The positive is that the Waste King warranty itself seems to be very good, judging by the comments users have made when they do need the manufacturer to sort out an issue.

A big gripe seems to be the slow speed of draining. If you’re in a one person small apartment, or if you eat out most evenings (do you really need a garbage disposal in that case?), then this could fit the bill. But, I don’t like the slow drain away, it’ll just leave a scummy residual around your sink which you’ll have to also clean up.

Having said that, the 1/2 HP motor turns the grinding gear at 2,600 PM, which is good and fast. The unit comes with the EZ Mount system (if you have a thicker material sink, check the neck will fit first), and as with all the Waste King garbage disposals, it conveniently comes with the built in power cord and plug – no electrician required (assuming you’ve got a socket under your sink already!).

The 1001 Waste King only comes with a 2-year limited warranty (reflected in its low price), weighs a supermodel skinny 9.05 pounds, and measures a barely visible 5.2 x 5.2 x 12.8 inches.

6). Waste King Legend Series 1/3 HP Continuous Feed Garbage Disposal with Power Cord – (L-111)

The Takeaway – ‘Another tiny unit with a tiny motor, at a tiny price with a tiny warranty’

This L-111 garbage disposer is very similar with the same housing as the above reviewed L-1001. Check out the installation picture below …

… and compare it with the larger, more powerful garbage disposal units (such as the L-2600 above) from Waste King …

WasteKing L-2600 installed under sink
WasteKing L-2600 installed under sink

This unit has the smaller 1/3 HP motor, giving a slower 1900 RPM grinding speed. It should handle most disposal duties with the galvanized grinding gear, but will inevitably not be suitable for families.

The benefit of the smaller motor is definitely less noise. If you’ve got a small apartment and it’s just you with a small under-sink space, then this unit or the slightly more powerful L-1001 above, should do the job.

But, don’t expect miracles. For around $50, you are not going to get a unit that will last a lifetime. As such, it comes with only a 2 year warranty.

Most users seem to be happy, but for this price, Waste King will have had to made some concessions.

The light weight will be suitable for cheaper sinks made of flimsier metal, and the usual integrated power cord with plug makes installation easier.

The Waste King 111 is backed by a 2-year limited warranty, weighs only 7.5 pounds, easily fits into small under-sink places, and dimensions of the product are: 5.2 x 5.2 x 12.8 inches.

Overall, aim for a unit with a longer warranty (which would typically imply better quality materials) if you have the finances – you don’t want the hassle of fixing or changing the unit after a couple of years.

7). Waste King Legend Series 3/4 HP Original Continuous Feed Garbage Disposal with Power Cord – (L-3300)

The Takeaway – ‘Big strong garbage disposer, not expensive, long 10 yr warranty, needs a tough sink to mount it to, worth serious consideration for a growing family’

During my research for this Waste King L-3300 unit, I discovered this Verified User Review on Amazon. It is one of the best and most comprehensive reviews for this product that I have seen, with useful information covering almost every aspect of the device and its installation. It is therefore well worth reading it by clicking here.

With a strong, high-speed 3/4 HP, 2700 RPM motor you can expect a lot from this unit. The Waste King 3300 can grind even difficult food scraps with ease and no jams. The motor is not only powerful but also sound-insulated which means it delivers ‘smooth and quiet’ performance versus a standard disposer.

Be aware that the’smooth and quiet’ is only relative. As the linked review above points out, the mechanism to prevent or limit jams requires the grinding teeth to be flung outwards on startup, and so you can expect a ‘grinding spoon’ type of noise. However, this does seem to be normal for all the Waste King units, and shouldn’t cause undue alarm. Just be aware of it.

Some of the negative user comments do mostly revolve around the sink seal starting to leak. But, to be fair, the positive reviews for this unit hugely outweigh the handful of negatives. And, if leakage does occur, then it does seem to be around the 6 year plus mark. For me, and with a 10 year warranty, I would be inclined to take a punt that this is unlikely to cause me an issue.

Users also have the occasional leakage issue through the internal grinding chamber rusting out. But, again, it seems to be pretty few and far between, and certainly no more common than all the other models.

The unit measures 8.5 x 8.5 x 14.5 inches has the EZ Mount lock design for quick installation, removable splashguard for easy cleaning, and a pre-installed 32 inch power cord.

It is a big unit, with one of the bigger and higher power motors …

Waste King Legend Series Garbage Disposal - L-3300 in use
Waste King Legend Series Garbage Disposal – L-3300 in use

If you have a good heavy sink to install it under (20+ lbs and ideally heavier), then it should cause no problems. If you have a flimsy (under 10 lbs) cheap no-name stainless steel sink, this unit as with all larger motor garbage disposal units could cause you vibration and noise issues. Just be aware.

Activated by a wall switch, this Continuous Feed Garbage Disposal weighs 10 pounds, and comes with a 10 year warranty.

Overall, for not a lot of cash (around $120), the Waste King L-3300 garbage disposer is a good purchase decision for a growing family (if you have a good solid sink to mount it to!).

8). Waste King Legend Series 1 HP Continuous Feed Garbage Disposal with Power Cord – (9980)

The Takeaway – ‘Everything written above about the L-3300 applies here, but more so due to the bigger 1 HP motor. A user calls it ‘The Pit Bull of Disposers’ – you’ve been warned!’

If you’re considering the L-8000, reviewed above, then this Waste King 9980 is exactly the same except with the 3 bolt mounting system instead of the EZ Mount system of the L-8000.

The Waste King 9980 is a strong beast that runs with a 1 HP, 2800 RPM (115 volts) permanent magnet motor. Having a high-speed motor that is about as powerful as my wood-chipper lets you quickly grind difficult food waste (and pretty much anything else you can think of) instantly, and without delays and jams!

Furthermore, this 9980 model is sound-insulated and, judging by lots of glowing user reviews, does not create particularly loud noises while in operation (obviously, don’t expect silence, this unit is a beast).

Like all the other Waste King models, the 9980 also comes with a pre-installed 32 inch. power cord. Added to that, it has a Lifetime Warranty, which implies better materials being used inside.

As far as the installation is concerned, the Waste King Garbage Disposal 9980 has a professional 3-Bolt Mount design, with a major difference being an inseparable splash guard. Not terrible, but be aware that some user comments mention smells over time, most likely from the build up of waste in the grinding chamber being secreted behind the splash guard. If it is not removable, then this may cause some cleaning difficulties. Just be aware.

The product weighs a heavy 12.93 pounds (the heaviest of all the Waste King Models), and measures a chunky 8.5 x 8.5 x 16 inches.

If you can find this unit at a lower price (currently hovering at around $150) than the L-8000, and are happy with the 3 bolt mounting system rather than the EZ Mount of the L-8000, go for this unit, as it is the same in all other respects.

Having said that, be aware that it is heavy and you really do need a solid and good quality sink to mount this thing to. If you have that, plus need the power, for example, for a large family of 6 or more, then this is a great unit again with lots of good reviews and not many negatives.

9). Waste King 1.0 Horsepower Garbage Disposal with Exclusive Silencer Technology, A1SPC Knight

The Takeaway – ‘Too big, too blingy, too expensive – save your money – if you want a 1 HP unit, the L-8000 or 9980 will both do the job’

A space-age remodel by Waste King for this A1SPC Knight garbage disposal unit.

If you like bling, then the cost might be worth it. It’s not a stainless steel outer housing, but chromed plastic, so just be aware …

Waste King A1SPC Knight 1 HP Garbage Disposal installed
Waste King A1SPC Knight 1 HP Garbage Disposal installed

The unit is also big, as can be seen by this user’s comparison of the A1SPc with the InSinkErator Evolution Compact …

Waste King A1SPC Knight 1 HP Garbage Disposal compared with InSinkErator Evolution Compact
Waste King A1SPC Knight 1 HP Garbage Disposal compared with InSinkErator Evolution Compact

Overall, good user comments and reviews. The main negatives are occasional leaky units, seems to struggle with watermelon rind in particular, and that it is particularly large thus taking up a lot of under sink space.

This unit is basically a re-housed L-8000 or 9980. All the comments in those reviews above apply here. The 1 HP motor spins at 2,700 RPM, and utilizes a nylon-filled grinding chamber to prevent corrosion and rusting through over time.

A one stage grinding system gets most of the toughest food waste smashed and instantaneously pulped with ease.

The advertising promotes the “Exclusive Silencer Technology”, using the same material that soundproofs music studios. All of the unit’s stainless steel parts are insulated with this advanced technology to give you the quietest grind possible. However, a number of user comments do seem to suggest that there isn’t really any noticeable difference to that of other Waste King units. So, perhaps consider whether this feature alone is worth paying the extra.

The unit comes with a pre-installed 36 inches power, allowing simple plug and play.

The “Snap and Lock” mounting system makes the Waste King Knight one of the easiest garbage disposals to install, providing you have an existing 3 bolt mounting system. Otherwise, most users find it a simple process to install from scratch.

The product is another heavy brute, weighing in at 17.5 pounds. My advice is not to buy this unit if you have a cheaper, light weight sink unit. You need a solid, heavy duty sink to better damp the vibrational sounds during use.

As mentioned above, and as can be seen in the pictures, it is also big. It takes up a lot of space under your sink, with dimensions running to 8.8 x 8.8 x 15 inches. Do you really need a unit that is this big? Sure, it looks like something Batman might have and is likely to fit smartly in your newly remodeled kitchen. But, honestly, how often are you really going to look at this thing once it’s installed? Surely you want the space under your sink for cleaning products and the like, right?

If you do decide to buy this unit, you’ll have the reassurance of a Lifetime Warranty, and user comments about Waste King honoring hte warranty are good.

For me, this unit is unnecessarily large and blingy. If I need a big and powerful disposer to meet the needs of a large family, providing I had a solid sink to mount it to, I would go for the L-8000 or the 9980 (depending on the mounting system – EZ Mount for the former and 3 Bolt for the latter), and save around $40 or more.

10). Waste King Legend Series 3/4 HP Continuous Feed Garbage Disposal with Power Cord – (9940)

The Takeaway – ‘More than enough for a family of four, 3 Bolt mount, otherwise the same as the L-3300 (see Review 7 above) but with two years less on the warranty (hint: aim for the L-3300)’

This review of the Waste King 9940 is an interesting one. The 5 star user reviews are less, but (and this is the interesting bit!) so are the 1 star reviews. In other words, compared to the other Waste King garbage disposers reviewed above, there is a much lower percentage of very negative reviews. My initial takeaway from that is that the 9940 garbage disposer does a solid job – nothing spectacular, but also nothing terrible.

So, let’s take a closer look at the Waste King 9940 garbage disposer …

Similar to many of the units above, this garbage disposer gives you a mid-range motor at 3/4 HP which spins the stainless steel grinding gear at a good 2,700 RPM.

Sound insulation comes as standard, as with the other Waste King disposers. Again, as discussed above, it is important that you’re aware of where you will mount this unit, as the solidity and rigidity of your sink will be a factor in the noise it generates during use.

Having a 3/4 HP motor, which is both lighter and produces slightly less torque than than the bigger 1 HP motors reviewed above, is definitely going to result in less vibrational noise, particularly if you have a lighter-weight sink (eg. being less than 10 lbs and/or a lighter grade of stainless steel).

Let’s talk about the two mounting systems offered by Waste King. This 9940 unit uses the 3 Bolt mount design, and not the EZ Mount system of some of the other disposers reviewed above.

Experienced installers, such as plumbers and maintenance men, seem to prefer the 3 Bolt mount design. It is reasonably easy to install, and they suggest using plumbers putty on non-perfect sink holes, for example, if the sink hole is chipped or worn over years’ of use and abuse.

If your sink hole is in perfect condition, such as with a new sink install with a kitchen remodel, then the EZ Mount system seems to be fine and seals well. In this case, the Waste King L-3300, reviewed above, is exactly the same design and motor except for the EZ Mount system rather than the 3 Bolt design. At the time of this review, both this 9940 unit and the L-3300 unit are hovering around the $120 mark, so pickup whichever is on sale at the time.

The Waste King 9940 garbage disposer is not as large as the 1 HP units, nor as heavy – it measures 8 x 8 x 13.5 inches and weights 9.5 lbs.

You do get a lot of product for your money. However, this 9940 unit does only come with an 8 year warranty. This may very well be long enough for you. But, just consider whether you want the piece of mind of a Lifetime Warranty for a few dollars extra.

Again, the general consensus from users is that the Waste King in-home warranty is very good and they stand by it.

Personally, where water and therefore inevitably corrosion are involved, I would aim for the Lifetime Warranty, if possible. Once installed, you simply do not want the hassle of putting a new unit in, if it fails for some reason. With that in mind, that aims you at the L-8000, which is a higher power 1 HP disposer (but then the potential noise issues if your sink is flimsier). Your alternative would be the L-3300, which gives you the 3/4 HP motor and an extra two years on the warranty making it 10 years all in.

Some Great Features Included In All Waste King Models

Here we are mentioning some important features that are installed in all Waste King Models. Regardless of the model, price, size, or Horsepower, these listed features are available in each and every model:

  • All Waste King Garbage Disposals have high-strength, corrosion proof chambers with stainless steel grind components, resisting rust and extending the life of the disposal system.
  • All models feature a manual reset button, a safety feature which turns off the disposal system if the motor gets jammed or overloaded with food scraps.
  • All models have Continuous Feed Technology which means you can keep adding waste with the motor running. Grind as you peel!
  • Every model activates via a wall switch or a sink-mounted air switch, and keeps running until it is turned off.
  • All models have easy installation processes, using the 3 Bolt or the EZ Mount systems
  • Waste King Disposals are perfectly safe to use with septic tanks that are properly sized for your home
  • The Waste King Warranty, by all accounts, is well honored by the manufacturer

Which Waste King Garbage Disposer Should I Buy?

If my sink is solid enough, space under my sink is big enough, and I’m feeding a big family of four or more (or Football playing teenagers!), then I would opt for the L-8000. This garbage disposer gives me a nice balance of power (1 HP motor) and Lifetime Warranty (so, likely to be better materials) at a really great price (currently hovering at around $150).

If my sink is not that solid (i.e., it obviously flexes when you press down on it), then I have to opt for a 1/2 HP motor to try and minimize vibration noise. My tip goes to the L-2600. It’s a great price (a steal at $75), tons of positive reviews, but be aware of the lesser 5 year warranty.

For tiny spaces? Then choose the L-1001 (currently around $65).

And, if you have a young family, or just do not need the power of a 1 HP motor (which, to be honest, really is overkill for most families – you don’t really need a wood-chipper under your sink!), aim for the L-3300 (which gives you the 10 year warranty – fit and forget, and hovering around the $120 mark).
